We chose to have an independent midwife because my Mum had had very bad experiences giving birth, and was keen for me to have a much easier experience. I heard that having an independent midwife is the best way to do to prepare for a straight-forward birth, as building a trusting relationship and feeling confident and empowered by a midwife allows you to be calm during the birth.
"I can’t thank Virginia enough for agreeing to care for me in return for the work I was able to do for her. I feel incredibly fortunate that both my children have been able to enter this world into her trusted and loving hands!!"
I suffer from anxiety and fear of childbirth (tocophobia) and as soon as we met Kay I felt relieved and reassured. We wanted to find an independent midwife to support us throughout my pregnancy and birth, to be a constant presence, someone with knowledge and experience, who would get to know us, be honest with us and who would act as an advocate if we went to hospital.
By way of introduction and background, I am terrified of hospitals! And most other medical things if I am honest. My husband and I decided to start a family and I just assumed I would have to suck up by insecurities and get through my medical fears to have our family.
Virginia and Kay had been my midwives for the birth of my first son, and Virginia for my second so I knew I would be in a safe pair of hands again. This time I was heavily pregnant with twins when I decided to contact them again because I needed extra support and Kay became our midwife for this new adventure of twins!
I knew that I could homebirth without having to fight for my right to a VBAC and without any unnecessary stress. I believed I could have the birth that I wished for my baby because Virginia provided me with all of the evidence so that I could make informed choices.
As soon as I found out I was pregnant I knew I wanted my little one's birth to be as natural as possible. The fact that I had got pregnant at all had been a miracle; all the 'experts' had told me it wasn't going to happen.
I first discovered Kent Midwifery practice long before I became pregnant with my second child but I knew when I looked through their inspiring website that if I ever had another baby I wanted a home birth and that one of the dedicated independent midwives would be in attendance!
"I feel very lucky to have my baby girl Rasa here in England. When I talk to my female friends about their birth experience I understand how lucky I was that Kay crossed my way and became my midwife..."
